The deadline for enrollment in the entrance exam is March 1st of every year.

VIDEO

Is it possible to adjust my program, in order to record a single video for all the academic institutions I have applied to?
YES, as long as the core of the program is maintained:

  • at least 3 contrasted works or excerpts of works (for vocalists, at least 2 languages, an aria and an art song)
  • length:
    • for Bachelor, at least 20 minutes
    • for Master, at least 30 minutes
  • as a general rule, the recording is performed without accompaniment (for the vocalists, it is possible to have a pre-recorded accompaniment, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed)
  • exceptions will be considered for videos which have been recorded with an accompanist previous to the current restrictions
accompanist previous to the current restrictions

Am I allowed to ask an accompanist to participate to the recording of my exam video at home, if both of us agree to it? What if they work for the Conservatoire de Lausanne?
NO.
As imposed by the restrictions decreed by the authorities of the countries/regions affected by the epidemic, it is currently not possible to perform a recording with an onsite accompanist. Do not contact your usual accompanist!
In principle, the recording is performed without accompaniment. For the vocalists, it is possible to have a pre-recorded piano accompaniment, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed.

While it is not allowed to record a video with an onsite accompanist, can we record an exam program with an accompaniment that has been pre-recorded?
In order to guarantee perfect equity amongst students, everyone needs to comply with the same directives: recordings must be performed without accompaniment.

For the vocalists, it is possible to have a pre-recorded piano accompaniment, if available, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed.

Is it allowed to only record part of the 50-minute program?
The length of the program has indeed been reduced to 20 minutes for Bachelor candidates, and to 30 minutes for Master candidates.

With the hardware I currently have available (a Zoom Q8 camera), my computer cannot support a file size when the video is above 25-30 minutes, even if the quality is reduced to the lowest. Considering the current situation, I am unable to get access to professional material.

Therefore, would it be possible to cut my program into two or three parts in order to solve this technical issue?
The total length of the program has been reduced to 20 minutes for Bachelor candidates, and to 30 minutes for Master candidates.

The pieces and their respective movements have to be indexed (indication of the time code for the beginning of each piece and movement). What does “indexed” and “time code” mean?
In an ideal situation, the video must contain several “chapters”, allowing the viewer to jump to the next chapter (= piece or movement) like they would do with CD tracks.
If the above is not available to you, please indicate the timing of the beginning of each piece or movement in an attached Word document.

Can the video have cuts, e.g. in between the various pieces?
NO in principle, unless technical constraints require it.

Does a program containing 5 pieces have to be played in a row, without any break?
YES, in principle.

Does a 60-minute program have to be sang in one go (without any break)?
The length of the program has been reduced to 20 minutes for Bachelor candidates, and to 30 minutes for Master candidates.

Can the video be stopped, for example while I empty the water out of my instrument?
In principle, the video must correspond to a real life recital situation, where the musician remains onstage throughout the performance.

Can the recording be performed in a space with high resonance, e.g. a church?
Under current circumstances, everyone will have to do their best with the options available to them or not.

Do the candidates still have the possibility to come to the HEMU sites to record their program; if so, under what conditions?
Unfortunately, the possibility to come to the HEMU sites is currently unavailable.
The message that candidates have received did specify that they were invited to submit a video, unrelated to their ability to travel or not.

For the admission to the Musical Pedagogy Master, does the candidate have to send a video with a recording of the requested program? What part(s) of the test will be held via Skype?
The part happening remotely through Skype with the jury is the pedagogy interview; the candidate will not have to play the piano during this part. The instrumental part on the other hand does involve sending a video recording of your program, similarly to other curricula at HEMU.

For candidates who are applying to the Soloist Master, initially scheduled in two rounds (April, June): what material do I have to send before April 25th 2020? Just the video of the program related to the first round?
YES

Is it allowed to use accompaniment tracks other than MIDI ones?
NO, in order to guarantee total fairness amongst candidates, everyone will have to comply with the same directive: the recording will be performed without any accompanist.

For the vocalists, it is possible to have a pre-recorded accompaniment, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed

If a candidate is in confinement at home, with low quality video recording material, are they allowed to attach a sound-only recording of higher quality to the video they send?
The current situation is unfortunately complicated for everyone. We recommend that you record your program with the means that are available to you.
Besides, if you wish, you are allowed to join an older recording, if it was captured in better conditions.

When 3 different instruments need to be presented, how many videos should be recorded: 3 (one for each instrument) or 1 with all 3 instruments and the time code for each instrument?
You can record 3 separate videos, one per instrument.

ACCOMPANIMENT

Am I allowed to ask my usual accompanist to participate to the recording of my exam video at home, if both of us agree to it? What if they work for the Conservatoire de Lausanne?
NO.

In order to guarantee total fairness amongst candidates, everyone will have to comply with the same directive: the recording will be performed without any accompanist.

Is there a risk that a recording without accompaniment might be judged differently than a recording that involves one?
NO, since no one will be allowed to record with accompaniment (except vocalists).
The jury will pay particular attention, under these unusual circumstances, to guarantee a perfectly equitable treatment to all candidates.

Could HEMU provide help to candidates in order to find an accompanist for their recording?
Your program needs to be recorded without any accompaniment. Under current circumstances, it is indeed forbidden, in Switzerland as well as abroad, to perform instrumental sessions in the presence of an accompanist.

Do vocalist candidates have to perform a capella and leave blank any moments where the orchestra or piano should normally play, since they are not accompanied?
Yes, this is correct. That being said, vocalists are allowed to have a pre-recorded accompaniment, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed.

CONDITIONS & POSTPONEMENT

If a candidate is in full containment, is there any solution?
The candidate proceeds to the recording from home, with the technical means available to them.
Specific arrangements might be put in place, case-by-case, in order to address any exceptional situation (e.g. instrument inaccessible).
Decisions on any potential exceptions will be dealt with by the school’s Management.

Other music universities are rescheduling their auditions, in July for example. Would such measures be applicable for HEMU?
A mere rescheduling would have been totally random, since no one is currently able to predict the end of the pandemic and the lifting of the restrictions imposed during this period.
Therefore, a video recording allowing candidates to introduce themselves this spring seems like the only solution to ensure that conditions remain as fair as possible.
Additional admission auditions might be organised in some cases, if impossibilities are clearly identified.

For candidates who are applying to the Soloist Master, initially scheduled in two rounds (April, June): what material do I have to send before April 25th 2020? Just the video of the program related to the first round?
YES

The situation does make the entry contest difficult: candidates have to prepare and rehearse without their professors by their side, and recordings have to be performed without adequate material/ setting/ accompaniment. Could HEMU postpone the deadline a little, hoping the situation will improve?
The current deadline for submitting the videos is maintained. All candidates will therefore be in the same situation, and the jury will of course take this into account.
Should video recording not allow the proper admission examination in particular cases (e.g. depending on the instrument, or other circumstances approved by the school’s Management), additional admissions could be organised at a later stage.

THEORETICAL EXAMINATION

How will theoretical examinations be taking place?
We are currently examining the possibility to have these taking place online.
Further information will be communicated on an individual basis in due time.

For candidates who are applying to the Soloist Master, initially scheduled in two rounds (April, June): what material do I have to send before April 25th 2020? Just the video of the program related to the first round?
YES

MUSICAL PEDAGOGY MASTER

For the admission to the Musical Pedagogy Master, does the candidate have to send a video with a recording of the requested program? What part(s) of the test will be held via Skype?
The part happening remotely through Skype with the jury is the pedagogy interview; the candidate will not have to play the piano during this part. The instrumental part on the other hand does involve sending a video recording of your program, similarly to other curricula at HEMU.

MASTER OF ACCOMPANIMENT

How should the sight-reading recording be dealt with?
What about other parts of the examination? Is anything else being put in place?

We are currently reflecting on potential alternatives. We will come back to you as soon as possible.

MUSEC – MUSIC FOR MUSIC TEACHING

If the candidate does not have a piano at home, how should they proceed?
Proceed to recording your main instrument as well as the singing part, and clearly mention in the video recording that you were unable to record the piano piece for that reason.
Upon review of individual cases, additional admissions might be organised in order to avoid prejudicing any candidate.

VOCALIST CANDIDATES

Do vocalist candidates have to perform a capella and leave blank any moments where the orchestra or piano should normally play, since they are not accompanied?
Yes, this is correct. That being said, vocalists are allowed to have a pre-recorded accompaniment, but absolutely no MIDI-sound accompaniment will be allowed.

Does a 60-minute program have to be sang in one go (without any break)?
The length of the program has been reduced to 20 minutes for Bachelor candidates, and to 30 minutes for Master candidates.

PERCUSSIONS

Are there any ways and means envisioned for percussionists’ entry contest, in the case of a country is confined? How could the recordings be performed without access to the instruments? Are derogatory conditions envisioned?
For percussion candidates, on top of the actual procedures involving a video recording, we are currently examining the possible scheduling of additional admissions at a later date.

If the candidate doesn’t have enough technical material to record everything in one long shot, it is possible to send several separate video files, for each instrument?
YES, you can send one video per instrument if necessary.
