HEMU Orchestra

Conducted by renowned figures such as Ton Koopman, Jesús López Cobos, Ralph Weikert, Christian Zacharias, Bertrand de Billy, Simone Young, Benjamin Levy, Claire Gibault, Joshua Weilerstein and Kristiina Poska, the HEMU Orchestra performs a repertoire spanning almost four centuries of music, from 1650 to the present day.

The orchestra has made several recordings including performances of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, and Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony. The orchestra has also performed Dmitri Shostakovich's Eleventh and Twelfth Symphonies, premiered a work by Caroline Charrière, hosted evenings dedicated entirely to Gershwin and Michel Legrand, and performed several oratorio programmes with the HEMU Vocalists.

Through special collaborations with the Sinfonietta de Lausanne since 2021 and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra (OCL) since 2007, the orchestra has explored a vast repertoire, performing major works such as Bruckner's symphonies, Debussy's La Mer, Ravel's La Valse, Dvorák's New World Symphony, and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring at the Salle Métropole in Lausanne. The orchestra's dynamic collaborations also extend to the Orchestre de Chambre Fribourgeois (OCF), with whom they performed Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in 2024, and with whom they will perform Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony during the 2025-26 season. The orchestra also enjoys a fruitful collaboration with the Nouvel Opéra Fribourg (NOF).

The HEMU Orchestra also distinguishes itself on the opera stage, participating in notable productions such as Arthur Honegger's Les Aventures du Roi Pausole, Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte. The orchestra is regularly invited to perform at prestigious venues such as the Lausanne Opera, the Crochetan in Monthey, the Théâtre Équilibre in Fribourg, the Rosey Concert Hall in Rolle, the Auditorium Stravinski in Montreux, and the Théâtre du Jorat in Mézières. In February 2026, the HEMU Orchestra will perform in Sion's new concert hall, Noda BCVS, as part of a programme shared with the OCL.
